Liana was born in Rhyl, North Wales in 1948. Her family immigrated to California in 1954. Building from a passion for drawing that began as a young child, Liana found a mentor in her high school art teacher, Clayton Williams. With William’s direction and support, Liana honed her craft during her teenage years. As a result, she won a scholarship to Art Center School during her senior year and attended Chouinard (now California Institute of the Arts) after graduation.
After college, Liana worked as a studio artist and portrait painter. In 1976, Liana began teaching painting classes as well. In 1983, the northwest came calling, and Liana moved with her family to Bothell, Washington. In 1984, she opened Arts Umbrella Art Center, offering fine art instruction to youth and adults. Arts Umbrella is still going strong with classes and workshops, averaging eight to ten art instructors. Liana still teaches painting and drawing, enjoying her part in the students’ journeys through art.
Throughout the 80s and most of the 90s, Liana’s commitment to her family and to Arts Umbrella left precious little time to pursue her own art. However, with family raised, Liana is spending more time with her first love. Her new studio is a sanctuary where she uses oils, acrylics, and mixed media to create a variety of subjects, from representational to abstract.
A regular participant in Puget Sound regional art shows, Liana has won many awards in national and local competitions, and is a three-time finalist plus artist of the month in Artist Magazine. She has published in the Artist Photo Reference series by North Light Books. |
